Homeland Security personnel have descended on the North Carolina city as part of President Donald Trump's intensifying crackdown on undocumented immigration, according to official statements.

The initiative, named "The Charlotte Initiative", was disclosed on Saturday, with representatives stating that "criminal illegal aliens" would be primary subjects in the metropolitan region.

"Federal authorities are sending immigration officers to Charlotte to ensure Americans are safe and remove dangerous individuals," an official representative commented.

Municipal leaders, including Charlotte's mayor, released a joint statement criticising the campaign, saying it was causing "needless concern and instability" in the resident base.

Operation Details

Military-style vehicles and elite units could be involved in the local crackdown, according to internal government documents.

A group from a local church working on grounds at a eastern Charlotte church retreated to wooded areas when agents arrived, with a person being detained, according to accounts.

"We thought church was safe and nothing [was] gonna happen," a 15-year-old witness commented.

Background Situation

Since Trump's return to office, national forces have been dispatched to multiple cities including Washington DC, Los Angeles and Chicago to deliver on the pledge of "an unprecedented removal initiative" in US history.

The DHS said they are conducting the operation because the state has not respected the approximately 1,400 immigration agency persons held, meaning they had been discharged due to "protective measures".

City Status

The city is not a sanctuary city - urban areas that have policies in place to limit the assistance given to federal immigration authorities - but it is a "certified welcoming city". This is a official classification for municipalities that are focused on immigration inclusion.

"Federal officials will act to safeguard the public when sanctuary politicians decline," officials declared.

Community Profile

This urban area is an ethnically diverse municipality, with about nearly one-fifth of population being foreign-born, according to population statistics.

DHS has not disclosed how long the raids will persist. The Chicago operation, which commenced several months ago is still ongoing.

Earlier in the week, Congresswoman Alma Adams said she was made aware of the operation and was "deeply worried" about immigration enforcement personnel coming to North Carolina.

The subsequent location on Trump's list is set to be New Orleans, according to information, and that as many as two hundred officers could be sent to the city.

Enforcement actions in other municipalities like major urban centers have come under fire over allegations of overly aggressive tactics.
