Top-Flight Headlines: Hannibal Banned for Misconduct; Guardiola Says 'Back Line Must Get Better'

From the world of Premier League developments, a significant player was handed a significant suspension, a manager has pointed to a player's errors to make a point, and the Manchester City manager has demanded backline betterment after a chaotic win.

Mejbri Issued Four-Match Ban and Financial Penalty

The Clarets' player Hannibal Mejbri has been handed a four-game ban and a £15,000 penalty following misconduct in October's match against Leeds United. The Football Association confirmed the player faced a separate regulatory commission after an incident where he spat in the direction of visiting fans at the 67th mark during a 2-0 win for Burnley.

An FA statement said: “A Regulatory Commission has sanctioned the Hannibal Mejbri due to misconduct in their top-flight match against Leeds of 18 October. It was alleged that the player behaved in breach of the rules of the game or in a poor manner by engaging in abusive and indecent behaviour through spitting at or in the area of Leeds United fans.”

The statement continued, “Mejbri later accepted the allegation, and the Regulatory Commission imposed a four-match suspension and a fine following proceedings. The Regulatory Commission’s full explanation for the sanction will be published at a later date.” The team, now in 19th place in the Premier League table, travel to 12th-placed Newcastle this Saturday.

Maresca Singles Out Tosin's Errors to Prove a Point

The Blues' manager Enzo Maresca has argued that a lack of seasoned players is no a problem at team, pointing out that centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo's age did not prevent the 28-year-old from having a bad game during a 3-1 loss against Leeds United.

Maresca, who manages the most youthful squad in the division, rejected the idea that inexperience played a part in the poor result. He made his case by criticising Tosin, Chelsea's most experienced player in the lineup, who delivered an error-strewn performance in central defence.

“We always mention experience when we drop points,” Maresca stated. “After we beat Barcelona, we drew with Arsenal, nobody was mentioning experienced personnel. I know that if we don’t win, people are always searching for an explanation, but in my view the reason why we didn’t win against Leeds was not down to the experience, it was because we just weren't at our best.”

He added, “Who is the oldest one for us in the match? Who was? Was he any good? So, it isn't related to experience. It’s about those 11 players, they were not up to standard.”

3. Guardiola Says Defensive Solidity 'Has to Improve'

Pep Guardiola has stated his team have taken lessons from a recent scare against Fulham with the game has now been in the past. The team held on to claim a 5-4 win during a incredible clash at Craven Cottage, after leading 5-1 with almost 60 minutes played.

This followed they fought off a Leeds comeback to win 3-2 in their previous game, prompting further doubts regarding whether they are the defensive steel required to mount a challenge against pace-setters Arsenal. “It’s behind us,” he said. “Valuable learnings, I hope. At this level, at all the clubs, one must take onboard both good and bad performances and results and think of the next one.”

“Naturally I am worried,” Guardiola added. “We are trying to understand the cause, to not allow so many goals. After conceding three by Leeds, and the five against Fulham it shows the two sides, right? So, we have we have done plenty of good things. But the number of attempts had Leeds have? Three? They scored two. That ratio is good. And attempts did Fulham have? Five, six? So, our ratio of shots conceded we can see too high. We have to be better.”

Newcastle Focus on Livramento and Botman Deals

The Magpies' new football chief, Ross Wilson, has placed new deal discussions involving important backline players Tino Livramento and Sven Botman the priority on his to-do list at St James’ Park. He arrived after leaving Nottingham Forest recently and was pleased to learn playmaker Sandro Tonali has a contract extending to 2029 with an option until 2030.

This allows Wilson to prioritise talks with Livramento and Botman's agents. Livramento's agreement set to expire in 2027 and Botman's a year later, the club's talks have assumed some importance.

“The initial three or four days in the job is when I found that Sandro’s deal was much more secure than I had thought,” said Wilson. “But it’s well known that we wishes to extend Tino’s contract and also wants to extend Sven Botman’s as well. Those discussions are underway.”

Manager Eddie Howe is missing Botman against the match with Burnley on Saturday, and he likely to be sidelined for at least another week.

5. Nuno Says Paquetá Will Start for West Ham

West Ham manager Nuno Espírito Santo has confirmed that Lucas Paquetá is back to the starting lineup for the side face Brighton this Sunday, after serving a ban following a red card against Liverpool.

“That incident is behind us,” the manager said. “I am positive it won't happen again because he himself admitted the error. We discussed it in the dressing room. I believe it is over and it will not be repeated.”

Nuno also understands the intense pressure facing his team, currently in the relegation zone ahead of the weekend matches. “We cannot avoid it,” he said. “It is the situation. We must confront it. We are fighting for survival. We can't hide it.”

6. Arteta Pleased with No 9 Stand-in Merino

The Spanish midfielder could continue as Arsenal’s central striker despite the club's usual strikers are fit again. Merino has been playing as an emergency number nine due to injuries to Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.

He scored Arsenal’s first goal against Brentford before assisting Bukayo Saka for the second goal during a 2-0 win which preserved {their|
