Thomas Tuchel Claims Best Players Do Not Necessarily Form the Strongest Squad

The England manager declared that assembling the highest-profile players is no assurance of building the most effective team unit. He hinted that even if the Real Madrid midfielder had returned to peak fitness after his shoulder injury, the player could still have missed out from the recent national team selection.

Focus on Team Spirit

The Three Lions' manager also indicated that Bukayo Saka's return may not have happened if his teammate Noni Madueke remained fit. The coach has put great importance on team cohesion with his choices for the forthcoming Wales friendly and World Cup qualifier in Latvia.

"We're building the strongest squad," stated Tuchel, who challenged the conventional wisdom that World Cup winners typically choose their most dangerous attacking players.

Previous Results

The manager referenced the excellent atmosphere during last month's international break when England beat Andorra and excelled against the Serbian team in Bellingham's absence. He saw no reason to change the squad chemistry that produced those impressive results.

  • Bellingham left out even though Real Madrid return
  • Phil Foden omitted despite improved form
  • Grealish additionally was excluded

Physical Condition Factors

Although the manager partly explained Bellingham's exclusion to fitness concerns, he acknowledged that the midfielder desired selection when they spoke. Tuchel had earlier apologized to Bellingham for comments regarding his playing behavior.

"Don't you think that behavior from substitutes, commitment in sessions, and team togetherness enables the starting eleven to perform to their potential?" Tuchel asked.

Team Choices Explained

The coach stressed that his selections weren't individual targeting specific individuals but rather recognized those who had delivered in the last campaign.

"What would be my explanation dropping them and still be authentic in my words?" Tuchel asked.

Necessary Adjustments

The sole alteration to the squad proved necessary with injured Madueke making way for the returning Bukayo Saka. Tuchel clarified that the Arsenal winger could have been excluded had Madueke remained fit.

Additional omissions featured Chelsea's attacking midfielder, who continues affected by injury problems. Given just two more camps before the World Cup, opportunities are diminishing for some players to prove themselves.

Tournament Timing Issues

The manager revealed his desire for national team matches to start later because of temperature worries in North America. He acknowledged this would create watching problems for English fans but maintained player welfare must come first.

"I understand the fans will not like it but for us it's better with later kickoffs," Tuchel said. "Our athletes make the sport and we must to protect them."
