German Right-Wing Dictating the Political Agenda, Research Reveals
Mainstream parties in power are more and more enabling the radical right to dictate the public discourse, as per a new research conducted in the Federal Republic of Germany.
Researchers found that this phenomenon has inadvertently helped radical parties by legitimising their viewpoints and disseminating them more widely.
Analysis Based on Over 20 Years of Media Reporting
The results, published in the academic journal on political studies, relied on an computerized content review of more than 520,000 articles from a half-dozen national publications.
Berlin-based researchers observed that as the radical faction shifted from fringe issues in the late 1990s to core subjects like integration and immigration, established parties progressively adapted their communication in reaction.
This adjustment amplified the dissemination of these concepts and indicated to voters that such stances were legitimate.
Implications for Democratic Systems
"Political discourse by mainstream parties is crucial in the electoral success of the far right," explained a expert in political behavior involved in the research.
"This factor has been underestimated," she noted.
The impact was evident even when conventional parties were criticising the far right. "You're still giving them attention," the expert remarked. "The main point is that because we live in such a battle for attention, this focus is crucial."
Normalisation Phenomenon Throughout the Continent
While the research was centered around the German context, this normalisation effect is likely to affect nations throughout Europe.
"You see this a lot in German and British news outlets," said another researcher. "The far right says something and everybody starts talking about it for one week."
"Even if you're opposing it, you're repeating it," he added.
Hardening of Public Discourse
At times, political figures have also toughened their discourse to align with that of the radical right.
In a recent discussion, a then German chancellor called for widespread deportations and urged them to happen "more frequently and rapidly."
Comparable examples can be found throughout the continent, as elected officials from countries including the UK to the French Republic embrace the language of the far right, particularly on immigration.
This has formed an echo chamber that was unthinkable a decade ago.
Core Problem: Who Dictates the Narrative?
"{If you're a centrist party and you are talking about cultural issues – immigration, integration – in a way that is dictated by the rhythm of the radical right, that's the essence of agenda setting," clarified a researcher.
Some political parties have taken additional measures, seeking to copy the strict platform of the far right, despite research suggests that doing so leads voters to cast their ballot for the far right.
Progressive Influence and Voter Awareness
The scope of data collected revealed that the impact of far-right parties had been gradual and had grown with the passage of time.
"Public perception doesn't change from day to day," stated a researcher. "But if you encounter this negative framing around immigration frequently, and it is being spread not only by far-right parties but also, for instance, by established political organizations, then of course this narrative gains more traction."
Requirement for Mainstream Parties to Carve Out Their Distinct Narratives
The study emphasized the necessity for mainstream parties to carve out their distinct discourses, especially on subjects such as migration and integration, instead of constantly following the radical right.
"It resembles a choreography," said one author. "If the conductor is far-right and you're reacting to it, you lose the ability to choose which music should be playing."
