Caelan Doris Secures Spot in Irish Squad But McCarthy Omitted

Ireland rugby squad selection news

Newly reappointed manager the Ireland coach has included skipper Caelan Doris in his Ireland team for the fall matches, however lock McCarthy misses out.

Doris, who has not played since undergoing a shoulder operation in the start of May, has come back to Leinster training, but it remains unclear whether he will be fit to play against the All Blacks in the US on November 1.

Second row Joe McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot issue suffered during the opening Lions Test against Australia in July.

Ulster player Izuchukwu and southern province wing Nash also miss out due to fitness concerns, and number 15 Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing a hip operation after the Lions tour.

Dublin province prop McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only uncapped member in the 34-man group, but Irish rugby authorities states uncapped Munster pair Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped western province winger Bolton will head to Chicago as "backup".

Following facing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a rematch of their previous meeting, the team will play the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world title holders South Africa in the Irish capital.

"It's an exciting group to the panel and it's a chance for the veteran players and for the newcomers on the summer tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," commented the coach, back to Ireland duty after a break to lead the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.

In a largely experienced squad, the Dublin club's Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will once again vie for the first-choice number 10 position. The number 10 jersey is remains available, as the two players poised to play against each other for the first occasion in Saturday's United Rugby Championship match at the Dublin venue.

Ciaran Frawley is the additional fly-half chosen with the coach opting against calling up the province's Harry Byrne.

At number 9, Farrell has selected British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer Test wins over Georgia and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a recall for Connacht's Blade, chosen to teammate Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey form an veteran group of midfield options. Jamie Osborne is another option in the centres, though the youngster is also a frontrunner to deputise for Keenan at full-back.

Outside backs Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are included. O'Brien shone on his national team debut during the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.

McCarthy is the sole fresh name in the Ireland forwards. The loose-head prop has been in two of his province's three league games this season and featured in the second string's loss by England in the English city earlier this year.

McCarthy was selected in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not earn a international appearance.

Munster lock Thomas Ahern, who received his first two caps in those matches, is retained, and veteran Northern province lock Iain Henderson is back after missing the summer matches.

Jack Conan, who played in each of the Lions Tests over the summer, is set to deputise for the captain if the skipper fails to recover fitness in time to play the All Blacks.

The national team will assemble in Dublin on the start of the week before traveling to Chicago on Tuesday.
